Masks in Kokomo - for real
Hey Kokomo! Yesterday, in one quick press conference, the should-we or shouldn’t-we debate on masks became moot.
It’s no longer a suggestion or a sweetly-worded sign at the front of the store.
Starting Monday, July 27th, we have to wear masks.
So now what?
Around the country as particular stores and entire states have mandated masks, the burden of enforcement has fallen largely on retail workers and shop employees.
And the results have been as disappointing, to say the least.
From all corners of the country, there have been stories of violence, assaults and shootings when shop employees have asked people to wear masks or comply with store policies.
Not great, Bob.
So this isn’t a post to question what anyone believes in, what anyone thinks should be enforced or what anyone believes is right or wrong. This isn’t a post to toss gasoline on an already hot-button issue. That ship has sailed.
On Monday, we will all be itchy and uncomfortable and sweaty and grouchy. (Those are most of my Mondays already.)
This is a post to encourage us to do better. To be better.
We don’t get a choice in whether we wear the masks. We do get a choice in how we treat each other.
Let’s vow to take this hurdle together and to show some of that authentic midwestern kindness to each other. Let’s treat our employees well. Let’s treat our teachers well. Let’s continue to choose to support our local establishments.
Let’s make positivity louder, even through our masks.

So what do you think, Kokomo?
