There are a ton of amazing nonprofit organizations in our community. If you’re looking for ways to give back, but aren’t sure where to start, you’ve come to the right spot. Check out some awesome opportunities to help make a difference.


UPCOMING EVENTS


Howard County Historical Society Hall of Legends

The Howard County Hall of Legends will inaugurate a new class of inductees that include Meta Christy, Ben Cotner, Rachel Jenkins, Reverend Robert A. Lee, Dr. Lance Washington, and Don Moore.

These leaders have shown a huge commitment to helping make Howard County and beyond a great place to live.

The Hall of Legends dinner catered by Rozzi’s will begin at 6 p.m. Aug. 17, 2023, at The Venue. Tickets are $60 and can be purchased here.

When: 5:30 to 10 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 17

Sunday Funday at Kokomo Humane Society

Dog lovers bring a camping chair and watch adoptable dogs in their playgroups and cat lovers can enjoy a treat and interact with adoptable cats at the cat cafe!

There will also be vendors to shop during this event as well.

When: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 20
Where: Kokomo Humane Society, 729 E. Hoffer St., Kokomo


The Artistry of Wood Exhibit

Kokomo Art Center volunteer and artist Tammy Roe has organized an exhibit of her wood carving colleagues’ art. More than 10 artists will show off their various pieces along with live demonstrations and an artist reception.


When:
Aug. 3 to 26
Where: Kokomo Art Center, 525 W. Ricketts St., Kokomo, Indiana
Hours: The center is open from 1 to 4 p.m. on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays 

Live demonstrations will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 12 at the Kokomo Art Center.

An artist reception will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 26.

Sensory Science 4 Toddlers

Did you know? Toddlers and their caregivers can attend free Sensory Science classes at the Very Early Childhood Education Center in Kokomo on the days listed below! They will participate in age-appropriate hands-on science projects in a fun and engaging environment. Click here to learn more.

The Very Early Childhood Education Center is located inside the United Way Building at 210 W. Walnut St.

Samaritan Caregivers Gospel Concert

A free-will donation gospel concert benefitting Samaritan Caregivers will take place at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 20 at One Church in Kokomo. This concert features Matt Gerhard, Lisa Owens, Sally Duke, Cherresa Lawson, Kenny Beasley, Heather Schimmelphennig and more!

When: Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the show starts at 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 20
Where: One Church, 2734 S. Washington St., Kokomo


New Baby Bunch

Being a caregiver for a baby is a hard and sometimes isolating feeling. The library wants to offer a resource for a weekly meeting where parents can share support and find friendship. Specifically suited for those with a baby under 12 months old. Older siblings are welcome to attend.

When: 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 21
Where: Kokomo-Howard County Public Library South Branch, 1755 E. Center Road, Kokomo


48-Hour Film Contest

What would you do if you had 48 hours to create a short film from start to finish? Sign up to see what you can create with the only limitations being the required elements of the video, which will be released just a week before and you only have 48 hours to film and edit before the screening at Sun King Kokomo!

The kickoff meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Aug. 25 at Sun King Kokomo. There is no limit on the number of team members, except one needs to be at the kickoff meeting. The screening will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 1 at Sun King Kokomo. This event is partnered with the Kokomo-Howard County Public Library and Sun King Kokomo.


Other Ways You Can Help

  • Mentor a Child with Bridges Outreach Project 30 - For 30 minutes a week, you can help change a child's life right here in Kokomo! Mentees are partnered with mentors based on their educational needs and skillsets, then go to the child’s school for just 30 minutes a week to help with educational work (ex: flashcards and reading books, socialization time, puzzles, etc.) and just hang out!   • Donate gently used books and toys to The Very Early Childhood Education Center.

  • Donate extra school supplies to a local school.
