Pup Clean-Up for the Humane Society
When the owner of a group of dogs passed away, they were surrendered to the Kokomo Humane Society and in serious need of some tender loving care before being placed for adoption.
“Their fur was long and matted, and they were in desperate need of a grooming service,” said Karen Wolfe, the executive director of the Kokomo Humane Society. “... The dogs were a mess — really, really stinky, matted and terrified.”
That’s when she made a phone call to A Special Touch Grooming and Academy.
Rachael Porter, a former employee of the Humane Society and current groomer at A Special Touch, responded to Wolfe by asking how many dogs needed to be groomed. When Wolfe told her about the situation, A Special Touch offered to groom all eight dogs free of charge.
Once the dogs were dropped off at A Special Touch, the five groomers got to work bathing and grooming the matted fur from the dogs.
“We dropped them off and over 5 hours later the dogs came back feeling better, smelling great, and calm. It was just a wonderful thing for us and the dogs,” said Wolfe.
“We don’t do it for the glory,” said Porter, who's been a dog groomer for three years. “Most of the dogs we see on a daily basis are really well taken care of, and groomed regularly, and anytime we have the opportunity to help out the pets that come in that condition from the shelter and get them cleaned up and ready for the forever home, it’s life-changing for them.”
“The support from local businesses means everything, besides the fact of what they give, their time or their money or whatever, the emotional support is always so huge. It’s overwhelming sometimes,” Wolfe said
