Kokomo Summer KidVentures: Miami SRA

School officially begins for parts of our area this week, so we wanted to leave you with one final Summer KidVenture you can still create for your family. For our last Summer KidVenture, we visited Miami State Recreation Area at Mississinewa Lake!

Located at at 4673 S. 625 E. in Peru, Indiana, Mississinewa Lake is just over half an hour away from Kokomo. The lake itself is one of three Upper Wabash flood-control reservoirs. The area offers opportunities for fishing, hunting, boating and more.

When you arrive you’ll need to stop at the park entrance and pay the $7 entrance fee per in-state vehicle. We started our visit with a little adventure through the woods on a short moderate hike on the Shepoconnah Trail. It was a little chilly and muddy, but that made it extra fun.

If you enjoy camping, this area has a lot to offer, including seasonal camping. Near the campground there is a playground area and a 24-hole disc golf course. We were having so much fun, it was time to stop for some food at the beach where there is a new camp store open seasonally with snacks and other necessities. The beach has plenty of space for a picnic or cookout, but we enjoyed the other playground and doing a little digging in the sand. For more information, including a map of the area, you can visit the Indiana Department of Natural Resources website for Miami SRA.

We hope you’ll visit Miami State Recreation Area while the weather is mild. If you enjoyed this series, you can look forward to a series of Fall KidVentures with The Kokomo Post Kids. Where should we visit next?
