Kokomo Civic Theatre Brings ‘A Christmas Story: The Musical’ to Life on Stage
‘A Christmas Story: The Musical’ will hit the stage this weekend at Haven’s Auditorium and you and your family are invited to the production of a beloved Christmas classic.
Directed by lifelong Kokomo Civic Theatre member and passionate thespian Beth Metcalf, this musical is filled with upbeat music and packed with all the iconic moments fans of the movie will recognize, but not without with a new fresh twist.
Upbeat musical numbers will captivate the crowd with the re-imagining of this 1983 film, great for viewers both young and old.
The show features a variety of actors of all ages, but according to Metcalf, a specifically talented young cast.
“I’m so enamored by all of them, one of them wasn’t going to even try out,” said Metcalf.
The musical also includes a tap dance number and according to Metcalf, this was something a majority of the kids hadn’t done before.
“They couldn’t wait to put on their tap shoes…they were so excited,” Metcalf said with a laugh.
The cast has worked hard to bring this fast-paced, heartwarming story to life. Metcalf describes the musical as not only fun for all ages but also emotional. While the production has the familiar elements of the movie, there are added layers of emotion through narration through live-action storytelling.
Metcalf’s passion for theater goes way beyond this production. Having started at just five years old, she’s been involved with Kokomo Civic Theatre for more than 60 years. After a break, she returned to the stage at 34, calling the theater her “therapy”—a place where she’s truly happy.
The sense of community and support is what has kept her coming back, year after year. “It’s been such a fulfilling journey for me,” she says.
With “A Christmas Story: The Musical” running this weekend, Metcalf said she hopes it will inspire both children and adults to continue supporting live theater, whether they want to be on stage or simply watch. The show runs at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
