Kokomo Curtain Call Theatre for Children is hosting its summer musical “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” this weekend.

You can support Kokomo Curtain Call by attending the performance and purchasing a ticket or by purchasing a handmade Wonka Bar from J. Edwards Fine Chocolates and Cakes during their open hours this week. You may just find a Golden Ticket!

This modern musical remake of the classic children’s novel by Roald Dahl will be “Pure Imagination” that you won’t want to miss. Follow along on the journey of Charlie Bucket and his dream of winning a golden ticket and the chance to tour Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory.

Organizers say local youth, adults and volunteers have been working hard to create an experience that will truly satisfy your sweet tooth. The musical’s director, Colburn Lambert, said more than 100 local people are involved in this production, ranging from ages 5-65 years old.

“I’ve been directing for over 10 years, but mostly working with adults. This cast has brought a new perspective to my work,” Lambert said. “There was a cast member who didn’t want to audition because of nerves, but now that she’s a part of the she is full of personality and lights up on stage. Things like that make this experience great for me.”

Evan Swope, 18, who portrays the character Augustus Gloop said he has learned a lot preparing for this show, and his performance experiences are more fun when the audience is engaged.

“The audience energy can really pump up the cast,” Swope said. “The challenge is, I’ve never had a part like this where I’m fully learning how to move, walk, and talk like Augustus would.”

Lambert said the performance features many young chorus members who simply love being on stage and getting to spend extra time with their friends.

Phoenix Partlow, 11, said she loves performing and she’s been anticipating this weekend performance.

“I like performing with my friends and my brother, and I like dressing in costumes a lot,” Partlow said.

Lambert said this production wouldn’t be possible without the help of many partners and volunteers. In addition to the special promotion and fundraising J. Edwards has provided with their Wonka Bars, AndyMark and their staff have donated time and supplies to create a real elevator on stage.

“I can’t brag enough about the team I’m working with, when it comes to making things happen,” Lambert said.

Tickets can be purchased online for the 7 p.m. performance on Friday, July 19 or the 2 p.m. performance on Saturday, July 20. Tickets and Wonka bars will be available for sale at the door as well. Purchases of J Edwards Wonka bars must be made in cash.
