Guide to Kokosnowpocalyspe: Family Edition

Predictions for Kokosnow were accurate, and most of us are stuck at home for the next two or three days. The snow is still falling, the endless social media weather chatter continues, and the kitchen is stocked with enough ingredients to make enough French toast for a month. The kids have finished e-learning and when they’re not asking you for *another* snack, they want to be entertained. We’re here to help you keep your sanity. Here are some fresh ideas that only require some of the basic things you have sitting around the house.

Cook or Bake Together

Let’s start off the list by killing two birds with one stone. Instead of making dinner or lunch by yourself, have your kids do it. The image below is a recipe from a kids' cookbook we have here at home, but Taste of Home has a great list of recipes your kids can tackle, all organized by age.

Science Experiments

There are so many opportunities for fun in this category! If this example goes over well at home it would be worth searching for more experiments and gathering supplies for the future.

Bathtime Fun

Why not send the kids off to the bathroom? Whether or not they are due for a bath, it's always a good idea to remind our kids of the importance of hygiene and self-care. But don’t make this just a regular bath, make it fun! You can add glow sticks to the bubble bath and rave like Partysaurus Rex (on Disney+) or even grab some toys and create a sensory experience with shaving cream and simply rinse it down the drain when the fun is over.

Indoor Scavenger Hunt

My family has been hunting in our house often. We turn all of the lights off throughout the house to make it even more fun. Participants should get a flashlight (or a phone flashlight) and their list of items to find. You can make your list long or short depending on the time you have to play. Here is an example list for inspiration. Ready, Set, Go!

Movie Night

Snowed-in movie nights just hit different. Pop some popcorn, cuddle on the couch and enjoy a movie together. Give “Encanto” a break for one night. Check out “Snow Day.” Sure, the reviews aren’t the best. But it’s silly; it’s cheesy. It’s made for a snowy family movie night.

Get Moving!

You’re stuck at home, might as well work on your fitness! Let the kids decide and get physical! Zumba, cardio or workouts with great music are always a ton of fun. If you need something for a beginner or more kid-friendly check out these options below.

This workout features a family of four and Coach Anna. The whole family will be challenged in their balance skills, squats, planks, and more!

This workout with Zeus Fitness is a great mix of cardio and fun. Grant builds up a cardio exercise routine combined with acting like animals. It’ll be fun to do and to watch!

Have a Family Fashion Show

Have your kids choose four or five outfits (the bolder the better). Then, choose a place in the house that resembles a runway. Take photos and play music or even go live on social media and share the fun!

Channel Your Inner Thespian

Put on a play! You can use any storybook you own, but here are a few simple scripts that would work too.

Social Media Coloring Contest

If your kids are at all competitive this one can be a lot of fun! Have your kids complete the same coloring page or draw the same picture, take photos, and share them on social media. Have your audience vote which one is their favorite with likes and comments and declare a winner at bedtime. Your kids will be asking who’s winning all day long!

Dance Party

Shake off some cabin fever and bust a move. No one’s judging here - this dance floor is in your kitchen. Let loose and get your groove on. Let us know: what’s on your playlist?

Build a Fort

Calling all architects! Gather all the pillows, blankets and couch cushions you can find. Work together, get creative, and build a cozy fort in your living room. This is the perfect place to snuggle up with a good book as a family.

Hopefully, these ideas inspired some easy family fun while you’re snowed in at home. If you need to escape the house for a bit, bundle up, be safe and enjoy this winter wonderland!
