Coyote Kids Celebrates 20 Years in Kokomo

Local kids’ running program Coyote Kids returns this week, marking the 20th anniversary of this cherished tradition in Kokomo.

Organizers say this six-week, all-ability children’s running program — put on by Club Kokomo Roadrunners and with the support of the community — is a free way to get out of the house and do something fun outside with your family this summer.

The program accommodates children as young as those who can walk with assistance, offering races of various lengths from 25-50 yards, 200 yards, 1/4 mile, 1/2 mile and two separate one-mile races divided into age groups. Each year, the program boasts hundreds of runners making their way through Jackson Morrow Park.

The running program dates back more than two decades, to local runners Ray and Robin Tetrault, who were inspired to bring the program to Kokomo after seeing something similar in Illinois.

Organizers say Coyote Kids not only encourages children to get active outside, but it also and inspires organizers and volunteers too.

“As a coordinator or a volunteer, you can get overwhelmed with all the preparation it takes to put on the program, but once you see those kids running and the smiles on their faces it’s all worth it,” said event organizer Ashley Shanks.

At the end of each race, each child will get a ribbon and a popsicle — and those who participate in all six weeks of the program get a trophy at the end of the season.

Adding to the fun, the famous Kokomo Batman runs in his suit alongside the kids, sharing his love of running.

“We have Batman and popsicles — what else do you need?” said Shanks with a laugh.

Organizers have enjoyed watching the program grow over the past years and delight in seeing returning runners who they’ve watched grow up over the years.

"It’s fun to see the kids back again with their smiling faces,” said Shanks. “They are enthusiastic, whether they finish first or last. Their genuine happiness is something many adults could learn from. It’s heartwarming to see such natural joy.”

For organizers, sharing their love and passion for running and creating a close bond with future generations is another reason the program has lasted so long.

“Running is a mental sport and so you have to dig deep and when you see someone struggling you encourage them. It creates that close-knit community,” said Shanks.
