Celebrating Black History Month: 5 Meaningful Ways to Show Support
As we usher in the month of February, we also open our hearts and minds to the rich history of Black history. In honor of Black History Month, we have partnered with influential leaders and advocates in Kokomo to bring you insights on how you can educate yourself and celebrate this significant occasion. We recently had the privilege of hosting JC Barnett, a local artist, coach, and Kokomo advocate, in our studio. Jc compiled a list of five impactful ways you can actively support Black History Month.
Support Black-Owned Businesses:
A powerful way to make a positive impact is by supporting black-owned businesses in your community. Take the time to research and discover what’s in your community. Your patronage not only sustains these businesses but also contributes to the economic empowerment of the Black community.
Read Books by Black Authors:
Immerse yourself in the diverse literary works of black authors. Explore both fiction and nonfiction genres to gain a deeper understanding of the African American experience. Autobiographies of influential figures like Frederick Douglass, Dr. Martin Luther King, Malcolm X, and others offer firsthand accounts that provide valuable perspectives and insights.
Watch Black Documentaries and Films:
Expand your cultural awareness by indulging in a plethora of black documentaries and films. From powerful biopics like "Malcolm X" and "Straight Outta Compton" to classic TV shows such as "Martin," "The Cosby Show," and vintage gems like "Good Times" and "Sanford and Son," there's a wealth of stories waiting to be explored. Embrace discomfort if it arises, ask questions, and strive for a deeper understanding of the experiences portrayed.
Buy and Seek Out Black Art:
Art has the power to transcend boundaries and communicate stories that words alone may struggle to express. Support black artists by actively seeking out their work, whether it be paintings, murals, or other creative mediums. By doing so, you contribute to the visibility and recognition of talented black artists who may face additional challenges in gaining exposure.
Be a Mentor:
One of the most impactful ways to show support is by becoming a mentor, especially for young black individuals who may need guidance and support. According to the CDC, the suicide rate among black youth is rising at an alarming rate. By investing time and effort into mentorship programs, you can make a difference in the lives of young people, providing support and fostering positive mental health.
As we celebrate Black History Month, let's remember that honoring and supporting the Black community is not limited to just one month a year. These five actions are meaningful ways to integrate awareness, understanding, and support into our daily lives. By actively participating in these initiatives, we contribute to a more inclusive and empathetic society, fostering unity and appreciation for the richness of Black history and culture.
