Best Ways to Celebrate Juneteenth in Kokomo


Juneteenth is a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. Deriving its name from combining “June” and “nineteenth,” it is celebrated on the anniversary of the order, issued by Major General Gordon Granger on June 19, 1865, proclaiming freedom for slaves in Texas.

Juneteenth Carver Center Summer Celebration

Join the Carver Center for the 4th Annual Juneteenth Celebration! There will be food, live music, DJs, drinks and activities for all ages including Bingo and a dunk tank. This celebration coincides with the Summer Concert Series featuring The Downstroke Band, Indy’s premier R&B and funk band, playing artists like Prince, Bruno Mars, James Brown and more. Admission is free to this community event brought to you by The Carver Center and Kokomo Housing Authority.

When: Noon to 11 p.m. Saturday, June 17

Juneteenth Celebration at the Howard County Historical Society

Guests can enjoy free admission to the Howard County Historical Society in honor of Juneteenth! There will be a four-part exhibit titled “Howard County African American History Revealed.”

Placed throughout the Seiberling mansion, this exhibit includes the first African American woman to purchase land in Howard County, the presence of Green Book locations, the story of a Tuskegee Airman, a nationally-known black entertainer, a Carver neighborhood map, women’s church hats, and a story kiosk for visitors to record their experiences as well as listen to the history of local institutions. There will also be QR codes provided to offer a more in-depth experience.

When: 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 17

Trax Lounge Presents: Juneteenth Taste of Kokomo Pop-Up

Enjoy live music, vendors and more at the Trax Lounge! There will be a pop-up shop with different small businesses and vendors including handmade items, food and so much more.
