“Lights of Winter: Winter Celebrations Around the World”
Written by: Heather Conrad
Illustrated by: deForest Walker
“Lights of Winter: Winter Celebrations Around the World” is an exploration of diverse festive traditions during the winter season. The author explores celebrations from various corners of the globe, including Solstice, Yule, Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and Diwali. With vivid descriptions and historical context, the book not only educates, but also is a cozy read that will put the family in the holiday spirit.
2. “The Legend of St Nicholas: A Story of Christmas Giving”
Written by: Dandi Daley Mackall
Illustrated by: Richard Cowdrey
“The Legend of St. Nicholas” is a tale that explores the origins of the beloved figure Santa Claus. The original figure spent his life secretly helping the poor by giving gifts on Christmas Eve. The book brings to life the spirit of generosity and kindness associated with St. Nicholas, making it a timeless and inspiring read for both children and adults.
This book not only entertains but also reinforces the true meaning of giving during the holiday season.
3. “The Shortest Day”
Written by: Susan Cooper
Illustrated by: Carson Ellis
“The Shortest Day” is written as a poem that celebrates the winter solstice. This beautifully written and illustrated text paints a vivid picture of nature’s approach to the day’s briefest moment. It beautifully captures the wonder and connection to nature that the winter solstice brings. This would make a great read for the family during the December months, but it would also be a great read for the new year with a discussion about rest and new beginnings.
4. “The Polar Express”
Written & Illustrated by: Chris Van Allsburg
I know, I know. We have all seen this move 100 times. However, when I was in fifth grade, my teacher read us this book by Chris Van Allsburg. Often with a unique twist at the end, Van Allsburg’s stories have won many awards in children’s literature. It’s a beautifully told Christmas story that focuses more on the lesson of gratitude and the belief in the magic of Christmas. If you have never read the book on which the movie was based, it definitely deserves a place on your shelf to read to your children every year.”
5. “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever”
Written by: Barbara Robinson
Another older classic book (published in 1971), this heartwarming story remains one of my favorites. It is both funny and heartwarming to follow the misfit Herdman family as they shock the church folk with their irreverent participation in the local church’s Christmas Pageant. While all of the church folk in the story think the Herdman’s have a lot to learn about how to act in church, the Herdman’s ultimately teach them more important lessons about love and acceptance.
