Staycation in Kokomo: Junior Chefs Program

Spring break has arrived in Kokomo, and while a tropical vacation may not be in the cards this year, fear not! We've got something exciting lined up for you and your family. We recently introduced our brand new "Staycation" video series, where we journey through Kokomo, uncovering the best family-friendly events and activities the city has to offer. Perfect for keeping your family entertained during the break or whenever you need a local adventure fix!

In our latest episode, we took The Kokomo Post Kids on a delightful excursion to the heart of downtown Kokomo – the Kokomo Family YMCA – to try out the Junior Chefs program. This innovative initiative aims to acquaint children with cooking techniques while instilling in them the importance of making mindful food choices, all through hands-on experience and fun recipes.

Our mission for the day? Crafting a delicious treat: apple nachos at the Kokomo Family YMCA’s Junior Chefs Program!

The recipe for our apple nachos was simple, featuring apple slices, chocolate chips, caramel, and everyone's favorite, Oreo cookies. However, if you’ve been inspired by our adventure, feel free to customize your apple nachos to your liking – the possibilities are endless!

Our junior chefs got started by suiting up in their aprons. Each child received pre-cut apple slices and a sheet of aluminum foil to serve as the foundation for their nachos, ready to undergo a brief stint in the oven to achieve that perfect ooey-gooey chocolate melt. Each child also got a baggie of Oreos and was instructed to crush them up – undoubtedly the highlight of the activity!

While the junior chefs were hard at work crafting their creations, the instructor intertwined education, sharing tidbits such as the nutritional benefits housed within the apple's skin. Once the Oreos were pulverized to the kids liking, chocolate chips were sprinkled, and the concoction was popped into the oven for a brief moment until the chocolate had melted to perfection.

Once the dishes came out of the oven, the apple nachos awaited their final customizations – a drizzle of caramel, a swirl of chocolate, and a generous dumping of crushed Oreos. And, Ta-da! The junior chefs had created their very own apple nachos.

So, whether you're seeking a fun-filled activity for your kids during spring break or if you have a budding chef on your hands interested in a culinary adventure, the Junior Chefs program at the Kokomo Family YMCA is a great option for your littles.
