Country Trio Runaway June to Cap Off Summer Concert Series
Grammy-nominated country music trio Runaway June is set to close out this year’s Kokomo’s Summer Concert Series on Sept. 9 with a night of hair, fiddle strings and a unique blend of country and rock and roll.
Known for their impressive harmonies, Runaway June has been making waves in the music industry with chart-topping hits like “Buy My Own Drinks,” “Lipstick” and their current chart topper, “Make Me Wanna Smoke.”
We had the opportunity to connect with the ladies of Runaway June for an exclusive virtual interview that will air in its entirety in the coming months. During the interview, the band shared insights about their busy tour schedule, their new music, and their excitement about performing in Kokomo — even adding that several band members have Indiana connections.
“We’re excited to bring some hometown boys home and meet the rest of the Hoosiers!” said guitarist and vocalist Jennifer Wayne.
During the interview, Bree delved into the band's journey, discussing the evolution of the band and their new sound. In 2020, founding member of the band Hannah Mulholland left the group, and Naomi Cooke left in 2022, leading some to call this iteration of the trio the “new Runaway June.”
“We’ve had a couple of band members change,” said Wayne adding that the transition to new members has, however, felt seamless.
“It feels like this is how the band has been the whole time,” said Wayne. “It doesn’t feel like it’s ever been different.”
The new members might account for the evolving sound of the group, which the described as “sexy, empowered and unique.” Guitarist and fiddle player Natalie Stovall said their new sound is “all of our influences stirred up and put in a pot together.”
“I didn’t come into the band thinking ‘let me just change all this up’. We were all three bonded by this new sound and we’re just going in that direction,” said the group’s newest bandmate, Stevie Woodward.
With their chart-topping hits and infectious energy, I think Runaway June is sure to leave a lasting impression on the Kokomo crowd, creating a memorable experience for the very last show of the Summer Concert Series.
When asked about what people can expect from a Runaway June, Wayne said the crowd can expect “high energy, a lot of fun, a lot of hair twirling, crowd interaction and dueling solos.”
“There’s hair and fiddle strings and guitar strings going everywhere,” said Stovall.
The show will be Sept. 9 in the Kokomo Performing Arts Pavilion in Foster Park and feature opener Reid Haughton. For more information, visit http://kokomosummerseries.com
