Local Teen Job Guide
Summer is almost here! Are your teens making summer plans, or trying to save money for something big? Many of them may be old enough to enter the workforce and apply for their first summer job. There are many local businesses that hire teenagers for seasonal or annual part-time work. Here’s a guide to get your teen thinking about their plans this summer. Updated April 2024.
According to the Indiana Department of Labor (In DOL) “effective 7/1/21 minors are no longer required to obtain a work permit in order to work in the State of Indiana.”
Summer or Seasonal Work
Be a Babysitter or provide Nanny services
If you enjoy working with kids or maybe have experience as an older sibling you might consider offering babysitting or nanny services during the summer months. Many families utilize these services during the summer break while parents continue to work full-time. Of the two options, babysitting may be a more sporadic option on weeknights or weekends. Many families will require sitters to obtain basic health and safety training or knowledge of emergency preparedness. You can find local organizations that offer first aid, CPR, and babysitter training courses. One local option is to contact Allison Hillis (ahillis@purdue.edu), Purdue Extension Howard County Health and Human Sciences Educator, for information about the upcoming Safe Sitter class that will be hosted on June 4 from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Another babysitting course will be available on June 15 at the Kokomo YMCA. Registration is available on their website.
