Kokomo Trails: Peshewa Nature Trail
Hey Kokomo! Last weekend, the weather was perfect. For most of the weekend, it was cool in the morning and the evening and the daytime was right at 75 degrees and sunny with a light breeze. We had to be outside.
So, we packed a picnic lunch, put on our hiking shoes, and decided to check out the Peshewa Nature Trail at the Reservoir Park. It feels like you’ve taken a day trip to Brown County walking on the unpaved trail, but in reality, you’re barely halfway out to the Howard County fairgrounds.
It’s a short drive out to the eastern edge of Kokomo. The park is located off of 500 East and 100 North. The Nature Trail is on the south side of the park, the entrance of the trail is close to the handicap-accessible fishing pier. The hiking trail itself takes you on a 1.3-mile walk around Kokomo's Reservoir Park.
The trail was a short enough distance for both of my young kids to take it on, but long enough that we all felt like we had spent the afternoon on an adventure. I had printed off ‘scavenger hunt’ sheets for both of my kids to keep them busy on the hike and on the lookout for wildlife, plants, and other natural treasures. The trail takes you along the reservoir and it’s all underneath a canopy of trees.
We left feeling like we’d stumbled across a well-kept secret right here in Kokomo. Other than a few friendly people fishing at the reservoir, we were only greeted by two other families on the Nature Trail. If you’re overdue for some time in the great outdoors, you need to check it out!
What about you, Kokomo? Have you been out to the Peshewa Nature Trail at the Reservoir Park?
