Approved businesses within the DORA boundaries will sell beverages in DORA branded cups, that can be carried and consumed in public areas, offering a fresh way to experience the vibrant downtown atmosphere.

The DORA program will operate year-round, from 11 a.m. to 1 a.m., encouraging a pedestrian-friendly environment and supporting local businesses.

According to a release from the City of Kokomo’s website, “This is an exciting step for Kokomo and our downtown businesses,” said Kokomo Mayor Tyler Moore. “DORA will create a more dynamic downtown experience, attracting both residents and visitors to support local shops and enjoy our events. By responsibly allowing people to explore the community with a drink in hand, we’re fostering a lively, social atmosphere that will boost the local economy.”

Participating businesses include:

  • Cook McDoogal's Irish Pub – 100 N. Main St.

  • Cooper's Pub – 113 E. Sycamore St.

  • The Coterie – 107 W. Sycamore St.

  • Foxes Trail – 305 S. Main St.

Why Create a DORA?

According to the City of Kokomo’s website, many cities have adopted DORAs as a way to stimulate economic activity and offer a unique way for residents and visitors to enjoy outdoor areas. Kokomo’s DORA will create a pedestrian-friendly, socially engaging environment that promotes downtown businesses.

Additional Details:

  • Signage: Participating businesses must display signs indicating whether customers can enter with an open container. Non-participating businesses can opt to post signs indicating DORA policies.

  • Cups: Approved vendors are required to use non-breakable cups with the DORA logo for drinks sold to be consumed in the designated area.

  • Alcohol Limits:

    • Beer or flavored malt beverages: up to 16 ounces.

    • Wine, cider, or premixed cocktails: up to 12 ounces.

    • Liquor-based cocktails: up to 10 ounces (no more than 2 ounces of liquor).

  • Entering and Leaving: Customers can leave an establishment with no more than two open alcoholic beverages, but only drinks purchased from within the DORA can be consumed in public spaces.

  • Small Business Rights: Businesses within the DORA can refuse to allow alcoholic beverages on their property.

  • Outdoor Patios: Permittees can serve alcoholic beverages on outdoor patios without needing fencing, as long as it’s within the DORA boundaries.

By implementing the DORA, Kokomo is creating an enhanced social experience, encouraging foot traffic and fostering a vibrant community downtown. Click here to learn more.
