Big News: Kokomo Is Looking for a New Baseball Team—and Maybe Even More

If you've ever spent a summer evening watching a game at Kokomo Municipal Stadium, you know how special it is. That view of downtown, the sound of the crowd, the smell of popcorn in the air—and when word spread around town that the Kokomo Jackrabbits were no longer, locals didn’t hold back. It was clear that the loss of the team would feel like a loss for the whole community this spring and summer in Kokomo. Well, exciting news: according to a new press release from the City of Kokomo, they’re officially opening the doors for something big to happen at the Municipal Stadium again.

The city is now accepting proposals from organizations that want to lease or manage the stadium—and ideally, bring a full-time baseball team back to town. Whether it’s a professional team, a college summer league, or even an amateur crew, the city is especially interested in teams from summer collegiate wooden bat leagues. Those leagues have been a hit in other communities and could bring some serious fun and energy to Kokomo during the warmer months.

But here’s the twist—it’s not just about baseball.

The City is also looking for a team or organization that might want to take on a bigger role: managing the stadium and organizing a full calendar of events beyond baseball. We’re talking concerts, community movie nights, food truck festivals, family competitions—anything that can bring people together and make the stadium a true community hub.

Mayor Tyler Moore summed it up best in the press release:

“We are excited to welcome proposals from baseball teams that share our vision for Kokomo Municipal Stadium. This is a unique opportunity to enhance our community’s engagement with both sports and entertainment.”

That means it’s not just about what happens on the field—but also about who’s in the stands, what we’re celebrating, and how the stadium can serve all of Kokomo.

The City is really hoping to see proposals that involve local schools, universities, and youth sports groups, and that offer great food and drink options and creative merchandising. And they’re looking for ideas that help keep the stadium busy year-round—not just during baseball season.

So What Happens Next?

Here’s a quick look at the timeline:

  • Proposals officially opened on April 16.

  • Anyone interested has until May 21 at 10 a.m. to submit their idea.

  • After that, the City will review the proposals and make a recommendation in June.

  • The final decision and contract should be in place by the end of July.

If you know a team or organization that might be interested—or if you’ve just been hoping for more reasons to hang out at Kokomo Municipal Stadium—this is the kind of news that’s worth paying attention to.

Proposals will be publicly opened on May 21 at the regular Board of Works and Public Safety meeting. And if you have questions or want more details, you can reach out to Torrey Roe, Director of Parks & Recreation, at troe@cityofkokomo.org. Answers to any questions submitted will also be posted on the City’s website.

This could be the start of something awesome for our city. We’re excited to see what’s next—and we’ll be cheering from the stands when it happens.
