Kokomo Fire Department Presents 2023 Safetypalooza
The Kokomo Fire Department is teaming up with Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital, Martins Wrecker Service and Indiana Heartland Federal Credit Union to present an event to keep kids safe in Kokomo.
The first Safetypalooza will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday Oct. 28, and will feature family fun, kids’ challenges and free bike helmets for kids.
“The heart for it is that we are going to hand out bicycle helmets for children,” said Jessica Gunning, administrative assistant for the Kokomo Police Department. “…I just wanted to make usre that kids who need a bike helmet have a bike helmet, because sometimes it’s hard for parents to afford.”
According to the National Library of Medicine, an average of 247 traumatic brain injury deaths and 140,000 head injuries among children and adolescents are related to bicycle crashes each year in the United States. As many as 184 deaths and 116,000 head injuries might have been prevented annually if these riders had worn helmets.
Saturday’s Safetypalooza will also include a trunk or treat, a smoke house and free food courtesy of Red Dog Saloon. Gunning said there will be a junior firefighter challenge, face painting and more fun for the whole family.
