Howard County: Mar. 7 Basketball Predictions
Sectional semifinal night is often considered the best night of high school basketball each season. The high stakes and intense emotions create an electric atmosphere, making it a highlight of the IHSAA boys basketball tournament.
Howard County has two teams still in the fight. Kokomo and Northwestern are preparing for crucial matchups Friday night and would love your support.
Now, let’s break down this week’s matchups and predict the winners.
Sectional 7 - Host: Kokomo
McCutcheon 13-8 vs. Kokomo 16-7
Just like in football season, Kokomo and McCutcheon are set to face off for the second time this year. The first meeting resulted in a 17-point Wildkat victory, but the rematch has the potential to be much closer.
Kokomo has everything needed to win one of the most competitive sectionals in the state. Indiana All-Star candidate Zion Bellamy brings the leadership and talent to propel the Wildkats to another victory.
McCutcheon is a team no one can overlook. The Mavericks are led by sophomore guard Brody Baker, who is averaging 20 points per game. He’s supported by a group of experienced seniors who understand what it takes to win big games.
Home-court advantage is a major factor for any team fortunate enough to host a sectional, which is why the Wildkats are slight favorites to advance to the championship. Coach John Peckinpaugh has won a sectional title in every season he’s led Kokomo and knows exactly what it takes to guide his team to another big win on their home floor.
Winner: Kokomo
Sectional 23 - Host: Logansport
Maconaquah 18-5 vs. Northwestern 13-8
Northwestern stunned West Lafayette on Wednesday night to advance to the Sectional 23 semifinal. The Tigers' defense was dominant, holding the Red Devils to their second-lowest scoring total of the season. Northwestern will need a similar defensive effort to pull off another upset against Maconaquah.
Maconaquah is led by Indiana All-Star candidate Josiah Ball, who averages an impressive 28.6 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. He’s joined by a veteran group of seniors determined to make a deep tournament run.
Northwestern holds a slight advantage, having already played inside the Berry Bowl this week. That added experience on a neutral court could be key. However, Maconaquah’s offense has been one of the most efficient in the state, ranking ninth in scoring. With fresher legs and the ability to control the pace, the Braves are favored to advance to the sectional championship Saturday night.
Winner: Maconaquah
