Local Entrepreneur Spreads Joy with Annual Block Party in Kokomo

If you ask Lionel McNeil what his goal in life is, he’ll say to make people smile. In 2019, he set off to do just that and officially opened the widely known and recognized HomeTeam Ice Cream truck — a move that has since become a symbol of happiness for the Kokomo community.

A lifelong resident of Kokomo, McNeil said his mission has been simple yet profound.

“I tell people when you get ice cream, you’re either smiling when you come or you’re smiling when you leave,” McNeil.

“Just to give something positive to our community and make people smile, I’m all for it.”

From 5 to 10 p.m. Saturday, July 20, McNeil’s HomeTeam Ice Cream and other local small businesses invite the community to a block party at the parking lot behind Tire Barn on Creekside Drive. Organizers say the event promises an unforgettable evening filled with music, food, and local vendors.

“It’s something we do to give back to the community. Even though it’s only the second year, people keep asking me when it is, so I guess it’s a success,” McNeil said.

The free event will feature live jazz from Jerome Saxton, a saxophonist from Indianapolis, and a soulful performance from Staci McCracken. Attendees can look forward to various food and sweet treats, unique clothing and knick-knacks, and alcoholic beverages to enjoy.

McNeil emphasized the importance of supporting small businesses.

“To see someone and other small businesses come up and do well, I’m all for it. A strong small business helps build strong communities,” he said. He hopes to inspire the younger generation to pursue entrepreneurship, follow their dreams, and succeed.

Reflecting on his journey, McNeil shared his pride in reaching the five-year milestone with HomeTeam Ice Cream. “It was a huge thing for me to reach year five,” he said, adding that he enjoys challenging stereotypes and societal expectations.

Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, come hungry, and carry some money to support local businesses. “Bring a good attitude, everything else is on us. It’s a nice vibe,” McNeil assured.

The event will also feature performances by Jerome Saxton and The Tony Bryant Project, ensuring an evening of great music and community spirit. Join McNeil and the Kokomo community for a celebration that promises smiles and good times for all.
