Heidi’s Hidden Gems: Experience Kits

‘Hidden Gem’ - Noun. Something possessing a value or beauty that is not immediately apparent, which therefore has received far less recognition than it deserves.

Welcome to a blog series where I help you discover businesses, experiences, food and restaurants you need to know about but may have missed. Join me as I give you all the details you need to experience these hidden gems in Kokomo!

I have a question for you. Where in Kokomo can you borrow a pressure washer, colorblind glasses, yard games, cake pans and a metal detector for FREE?

If you answered the Kokomo Howard County Public Library, you’re correct!

The library isn’t just for checking out books anymore. In 2017, the KHCPL wanted to help the community experience Kokomo on a deeper level, so it started to lend out experience kits.

There are more than 90 activities, experiences and projects able to be checked out, exactly like a library book!

These experience kits can be beneficial in so many ways, including:

  • Not having to purchase something you will only use once. For example, included in one of the experience kits is a cake pan shaped like the number one for a child’s first birthday!

  • A free “try before you buy” option for something you aren’t sure about purchasing. Not sure if a metal detector or colorblind glasses are something you’d like to invest in long-term? Check them out from the library first!

  • If you’re wanting to try something new but aren’t sure what you need to get started. Experience kits come with everything you need to try something new! Choose from activities such as Dungeons and Dragons, hiking, cake decorating, disc golf and even a karaoke machine.

Some other ways experience kits can benefit our community is through the educational resources they provide. For example, there’s a dog, cat, and baby-lovers dementia kit. This provides caretakers of people with dementia the opportunity to provide comfort to their loved ones with realistic baby dolls, cats and other activities to help improve their physical and mental well-being.

All you need to get your hands on one of these kits is a library card! Click here for more information on all of the experience kits the library offers.
