Nestled in rural Howard County you’ll find Greentown, an easily overlooked, one-stop-light town with a little more than 2,000 residents. Look a bit deeper into this small town’s identity and you’ll find a rich history of the arts.

From a state-of-the-art glass factory that had a short-lived history when it burnt down in the late 1800s, to the birth of the famous Seegar Sisters who went on to star in Hollywood films in the mid-1900s, Greentown’s rich history of celebrating the arts dates back to the humble town’s roots.

From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. every Saturday from Aug. 13 to 27, the public is invited to Meridian Street Christian Church in Greentown for a free art show highlighting the community’s thriving art scene.

At this show, you’ll find more than 80 pieces of work from artists of all ages and skills as well as art from local students at Eastern Elementary, Middle and High School. Attendees are able to explore a variety of mediums, including 2D and 3D art, and photography.

Something was missing when it came to presenting local art to the public, said Art Show Chairman Lisa Stout.

“There isn’t really a place in Greentown for local artists to display their work, so we decided once a year we would find a place so the artists can be more involved in Greentown’s community,” Stout said.

Stout said one of the show's goals is to encourage artists.

“I think there are so many artists out there that aren’t recognized,” said Stout. “They don’t feel like their work is that important, or it’s not good enough, but if we can just get them to enter our show, they can see that they are compatible with others in the community and their work is just as good.”

Attendees of the show are encouraged to come in once a week and vote for their favorite piece of art for the People’s Choice Award, which includes a cash prize and a ribbon for the winner. Other entries may also receive awards based on scoring from a panel of judges.
