After 27 games in the 2023 season, the Kokomo Wildkats find themselves right where they ended the season last year: one game away from a shot at a state championship. The Wildkats (23-4) took care of business on Saturday morning with a dominant win against Fort Wayne Wayne (21-5), taking the 73-51 win to move on to the semi-state championship Saturday evening. The Wildkats will play the winner of the Penn vs. Hammond Central game.
Once again, Kokomo’s Flory Bidunga stole the show. The Wildkat finished with 31 points, 19 rebounds and 8 blocks. He was nearly perfect from the field shooting 11/13 and added on another 9 points from the line. Bidunga also scored his 1000th career point in the game. That milestone came by the way of an alley-oop dunk in the third quarter. Bidunga ended the game with 4 fouls, a few of which were, in my opinion, highly questionable.
Shayne Spear also had a great game, finishing with 16 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists. Nine of Spear’s 16 points came from three, and he also added 5 points from the freethrow line. Spear was also — as he has been all season — a strong leader on defense.
Zavion Bellamy, who had a career performance last week in regionals, finished with 7 points, 3 rebounds and 4 assists. Bellamy got in a bit of foul trouble in the first half but came back strong in the second half to help the Kats secure the win.
