This week’s Kokomo Post Sports Game of the Week took place at Memorial Gymnasium, where Kokomo hosted its sectional semifinal matchup against McCutcheon. Home-court advantage helped the Wildkats secure a 70-62 win.
Kokomo opened the game with aggressive defense, employing a full-court press that played to its strengths. Zion Bellamy was efficient on both ends in the first quarter, helping the Wildkats take a 19-8 lead.
The second quarter mirrored the first, with the Wildkats sticking to their effective game plan. McCutcheon’s offense began to find its rhythm, but it wasn’t enough to stop Kokomo from extending its lead. The Wildkats closed the half up 39-23.
The remainder of the game was much closer. McCutcheon’s Brody Baker and Brody Raeke formed a one-two punch to mount a comeback. However, Kokomo responded with a surge to counter the Mavericks’ star power. A’Dayveon Young scored 14 of his 16 points in the second half and played strong defense, recording key steals in the third and fourth quarters to help the Wildkats maintain their lead.
The Wildkats’ win over McCutcheon advances them to the Sectional 7 championship on Saturday, March 8, at 7 p.m. at Memorial Gymnasium
