El Borrego Takes Mexican Cuisine on the Road

We believe it’s safe to say that when El Borrego, the Mexican restaurant and market located at 314 S. Union St. in Kokomo, opened its doors six years ago, it quickly became a local favorite.

Here at The Kokomo Post, we’ve had the pleasure of featuring El Borrego many times—whether highlighting the delicious dishes on Mini Tries or uncovering goodies from their market in episodes of Heidi's Hidden Gems. Just when we thought El Borrego had covered all the bases in offering authentic Mexican food and quality market items, they’ve stepped up their game once again with a new food truck!

Owner Celestino Bañuelos said that while El Borrego has enjoyed great success over the past six years, there's still more to be done to spread the word about the downtown restaurant and market. “

“One of our goals for our food truck is to get the word out about our restaurant downtown, to have more people try our food, and maybe make El Borrego their next restaurant choice,” he said.

The food truck serves as mobile marketing for El Borrego, bringing a taste of their authentic Mexican cuisine to more people in the Kokomo community. Many might be surprised to learn that behind the market’s impressive inventory is a fully operational sit-down restaurant, a hidden gem that Celestino and his wife and co-owner, Sonia Islas, are eager to introduce to more Kokomo residents and believe that with the food truck they will have more opportunities to spread the word about it.

In addition to spreading the word about their downtown location, the food truck also allows El Borrego to offer catering with a unique twist.

“We wanted to offer catering but with the ability to bring it to your events and have it cooked on the spot, instead of keeping it warm in chafing dishes. We believe it's something different that we don’t really see here in Kokomo," Celestino said.

So, what's extra unique about the El Borrego food truck? The hours! You can usually find it parked in front of Mi Familia Mexican Restaurant at 5125 Clinton Ave. in Kokomo, as both businesses share owners. The food truck caters to late-night foodies, third-shift workers, and anyone with a craving for Mexican cuisine during the late-night hours, operating from 9:30 p.m. to midnight Thursday through Sunday.

As for the menu, Celestino shared that while it’s minimal, the focus is on quick service without sacrificing quality.

“We offer different kinds of meat for our tacos, burritos, quesadillas, and tortas. One of our most popular dishes, Arroz con Pollo, is also available on the truck,” he said.
