Discover Kokomo's Hidden Gem: The Center Township Community Building

Here at The Kokomo Post, we’re always thrilled to highlight the best our city has to offer. Kokomo has a vibrant scene of entertainment and events, and our community loves to come together to host gatherings. One question we frequently encounter is about event and venue spaces. Recently, we discovered a true hidden gem: the Center Township Community Building, located at the corner of Union and Jefferson streets in Kokomo.

While the Center Township Community Building is a new discovery for us, it may already be known to some as it approaches its first anniversary. Opening its doors in June 2023, this facility was established to serve the community in various capacities. We toured the space with Chief Deputy of Center Township, Darla Pugh, who shared insights into the building’s purpose and amenities.

“The township and not-for-profit organizations have utilized our community service building for many years,” Pugh said. “Recognizing its full potential, we decided last June to open it up to the public to further serve the community.”

Tucked away on the corner, the facility can accommodate up to 75 people and offers a range of amenities. It includes wireless internet access, a kitchen equipped with residential-grade appliances, and audio-visual equipment available upon request. Additionally, the township provides 6-foot and 8-foot tables with chairs at no extra cost. This makes it the perfect venue for various events, including meetings, birthday parties, baby showers, bridal showers, holiday gatherings, receptions and more.

“Our community service building is special because it exemplifies unity and mutual support within the community,” Pugh said. “It brings people together, strengthens social connections, and enhances our community relationships.”

The Center Township Community Building is just one of many initiatives by Center Township to enhance the community, said Pugh.

“We encourage people to familiarize themselves with our services so they can refer those in need to us. Additionally, individuals can contribute by donating food or monetary resources to our food pantry, Hand Up Food Pantry, volunteer at our annual Community Expo, and advocate for policies that benefit township government. Each contribution strengthens the community and enhances the quality of life for its residents,” she said.

The Hand Up Food Pantry opened on June 17 and is located within the township’s office. The pantry aims to provide supplemental food assistance to those in need and serve as a gateway to additional community resources. Residents outside Center Township can use the food pantry once a month. The pantry operates from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday, Wednesday and Thursday and and 1 to 3 p.m. by appointment only.
