Comedian Dan West will return to Kokomo Friday for a night of comedy that also serves local veterans.
“Kokomo has always been such a veteran-positive community, that from day one when I moved there it blew me away,” said West, who recently relocated to Atlanta. “So I knew this is a way that you can do something helpful for the veterans in your community and just have a good time.”
And that’s not the only reason.
“There’s the charity aspect of it,” he said, deadpan. Because charity helps you get into heaven.”
West will be joined by comedians Dean Jernigan and Danny Hucks at 7 p.m. Friday at Sun King Kokomo for a night of comedy for a cause; a portion of all proceeds will benefit the local VFW.
“We want to try to keep it local,” said West. “Obviously the national veteran’s organizations do a lot of good, but they a lot of times get funding from all over the country and sometimes all over the world.”
The beauty of local organizations, West said, is that they offer needed fellowship to the local community in ways that the national organizations often cannot.
And West knows. A U.S. Army veteran himself, West said much of Friday’s comedy will be centered on his experiences in the military.
“There will definitely be a veteran-friendly atmosphere, but one of the goals is to make that material for everyone,” he said.
Emcee Jernigan is also a U.S. Navy veteran, and opener Hucks comes from a military family, West said.
“[Hucks] is just one of the kindest humans I have ever met, said West. “This is the first time that I have been able to bring him up to Kokomo. He’s hilariously funny and just a joy to be around.”
The show is sponsored in part by Cook McDoogal’s Irish Pub, Marble the Steakhouse, and the Hampton Inn and Suites, said West.
