A Mommy & Me Keepsake Workshop

We are excited to announce the launch of our latest video series here at The Kokomo Post – our Mother’s Day series! This special collection of videos shines a spotlight on some incredible local businesses that offer experiences and activities perfect for celebrating mom or any special mother figure in your life.

In the second episode of our Mother's Day series, we had the pleasure of visiting Fired Arts Studio in downtown Kokomo to experience a Mommy & Me keepsake workshop with Sharayah, the studio manager.

Chances are, you’ve already heard of Fired Arts Studio. Whether you’ve visited to paint pottery yourself, seen their events on Facebook, or witnessed budding artists hard at work while grabbing your favorite brew at Mo Joe's Coffee Shop (where Fired Arts Studio is located), it’s a local gem that’s hard to miss. And let me tell you – there’s just something truly special about a handcrafted gift, isn't there?

At Fired Arts Studio, they offer the perfect opportunity for moms and their little ones to create something totally unique. Whether you’re bringing along a toddler like me or planning a creative outing with your older kids, Fired Arts welcomes artists of all ages to unleash their creativity.

In our video, my daughter and I teamed up to create an adorable plate with our very own handprints and a personalized message: “My favorite thing about mom is...” How sweet is that? With snacks and drinks from the cafe in hand, we got started on our masterpiece guided by Sharayah.

We started by selecting our colors, with Sharayah’s guidance we were able to choose colors that complemented each other perfectly. Then, it was time to paint! Covering the plate in a wash of color was a messy activity that we both enjoyed, and then it was time to get even messier with our handprints.

My daughter enjoyed covering my hand in paint the most, as she giggled the whole time. And when it was her turn, the laughter only continued. While our handprints dried, we took advantage of some one-on-one time to explore the studio and check out their other ceramic pieces, sip on our drinks, and simply enjoy each other's company.

Next came the task of painting our lettering onto the plate – a step I admittedly struggled with a bit. But with the forgiving nature of the paint and Sharayah’s guidance I was able to correct any mistakes I made along the way.

And just like that, in about an hour, my daughter and I had not only shared some quality bonding time but also created a keepsake that I'll cherish forever. Leaving our creation behind to be glazed and fired, we left with our drinks and snacks in hand.

Just a week later, our plate was ready for pickup – and it looked even better than I imagined. If you’re looking for a fun activity to enjoy with your kids, look no further than Fired Arts Studio.
