Chocolate Celebration Celebrates 21 Years of Sweets

Samaritan Caregivers annual Chocolate Celebration is back and ready to celebrate 21 years of providing Kokomo with chocolate treats for a good cause. From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday May 5, at the Kokomo First Church of the Nazarene, $10 gets you three tickets for your choice of delectable chocolate treats from local businesses!

“It just makes people feel good. Chocolate is not restricted, illegal or immoral. We encourage moderation to take some home and to share with friends. But there’s something about chocolate that just has a broad appeal,” said Jamey Henderson, executive director of Samaritan Caregivers.

All proceeds benefit Samaritan Caregivers, which serves seniors ages 65 in older who live in Howard County. They’ve provided services that range from companionship, providing grocery shopping and other errands including transportation to and from doctor’s appointments and so much more.

Since its inception in August 1996, Samaritan Caregivers has and stills serve an average of 300 seniors in the community at any given time.

“Everything we do for seniors is free to them but we all know in the end, nothing is really free. This year’s goal of raising $30,000 will help us continue serving seniors in the community,” said Henderson.

There are currently 32 vendors from in and around Kokomo signed up to bring you delicious chocolate treats. Rozzy’s Catering will have a sweet and a savory option available — a chocolate BBQ or a sweet chocolate eclair croissant.

So Good Candies, which recently opened a Kokomo storefront at 3700 S. Lafountain St., will be bringing their famous bark, with flavors of Oreo, Carmel Pecan or Rocky Road to choose from.

Greentown’s Etta’s Gooey Goodies is a first-time attendee of the celebration.

“It's such a fun event and I love chocolate. I've wanted to participate for years! Everyone is so happy and excited for all the delicious desserts,” said owner Wynter Hosier.

If chocolate is not your thing, don’t worry! There will be regular food and non-chocolate items, including treats for your furry friends from Wesson’s K-9 Bakery, for sale throughout the event. Including homemade chicken noodle or vegetable soup and chicken salad or sloppy joe sandwiches for lunch, eat-in or to-go, prepared and served by the United Methodist Women of Grace United Methodist Church.

Presale tickets are available at the Samaritan Caregiver’s office, located at 2705 S. Berkley Road, or prior to 11 a.m. the day of the event to those in line. Day-of tickets are available inside from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Both cash and card will be accepted.

If you park at Maple Crest Plaza, there will be a free shuttle ride in which guests can take to the event and receive one free ticket per person.

Can’t make it to the event but still want to support Samaritan Caregivers? Deliveries will be made to local businesses with a $40 minimum purchase. Click here to fill out the form for delivery.
