The Howard County Fair Returns with Exciting New Changes
Brace yourself for a thrilling week filled with exhilarating rides, wonderfully greasy food, captivating entertainment and family-friendly experiences. The Howard County 4-H Fair is back from July 8 to 13 for an entertaining week in Greentown.
“We try to make it new and interesting each year, and the midway is always top-notch and excellent, so we’re hoping for some good weather and a good time,” said fair chairman Stu Nicholson.
Crowds from all over Indiana flock to Greentown for the second-largest county fair in the state. You can expect everything from midway rides to musical entertainment from Cook and Belle, Emily Ann Roberts, Major Danger, ALC Praise band, Medicinal Bluegrass, JC Project, Cora Kendall, Cumberland Gap and Greentown’s The Checkered Vans.
There are a handful of new experiences and shows coming to the Howard County Fairgrounds this year. Throughout the fair, you’ll find an entertaining pig race from Show-Me Swine Racers, the interactive strolling character called The Walking Tree Man, and the Wide World of Animals.
“Last year we had the tiger show, so we wanted to switch it up with something similar called ‘The Wide World of Animals’ which is an educational wildlife show,” said Nicholson.
Whether it’s for the food, the entertainment, 4-H, rides, strolling through Pioneer Village or shopping local vendors in the indoor tennis center, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. And don’t miss out on everyone’s favorite grandpa on wheels, Granpa Cratchet, who has been causing chaos throughout the grounds for the last 15 years.
At the South Grandstands, you’ll find the Miss and Junior Miss Howard County pageants on Monday and Tuesday along with the talent show on Wednesday.
The Northwest Grandstands brings entertainment in the form of KOI Drag Racing, an antique tractor pull, tractor and truck pull and autocross for those with a need for speed.
But perhaps the most underrated aspect of the fair is the 4-H program itself. This program, which has been around for over 100 years, provides children from kindergarten to high school the opportunities to learn, grow and advance in hobbies and projects that interest them.
“I always look forward to seeing the animals and the 4-H projects, it’s a big part of the fair itself and it’s an attraction in itself,” said Nicholson.
4-H provides more than 50 projects for kids to choose from. Including photography, cake decorating, scrapbooking, legos, sewing, gardening and so much more. Participants can submit their projects and then have them judged by a person involved and competent in that specific category.
So make sure you mark your calendars for the second-largest county fair in the state of Indiana and don’t miss out on all of the new and exciting things happening at this week-long event.
